Canada’s Rising Broadway Star Chilina Kennedy Featured in the April Issue of Vanity Fair

 

Toronto ON: Chilina Kennedy one of Canada’s rising Broadway stars has been featured in April’s issue of Vanity Fair along side Jesus Christ Superstar co-stars Paul Nolan and Josh Young.  Chilina said, “The experience was amazing! Our photographers Jenny Gage and Tom Betterton made us feel very comfortable and the stylists put me in a gorgeous Narcisco Rodriguez dress, I felt so elegant.”

 

Kennedy just finished her third season at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where she played Rose of Sharon in The Grapes of Wrath, directed by Antoni Cimolino and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, directed by Des McAnuff, who directed The Who’s Tommy and Jersey Boys on Broadway.

 

Chilina also recently won two Broadway World Toronto Awards. Best Leading Actress (Musical) for Jesus Christ Superstar – Stratford Shakespeare Festival and Best Performance by a Female in a Feature Role/Ensemble (Play) for The Grapes of Wrath – Stratford Shakespeare Festival.

 

After doing a sold out extended run of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival Mr. Andrew Lloyd Webber personally came to view the show in Stratford and fell in love with it, calling it “the best production of Jesus Christ Superstar he had ever seen.”  Des McAnuff brought the show to the La Jolla playhouse in San Diego, California prior to its run on Broadway.

This groundbreaking rock opera, which reinvented musical theatre for the modern age, tells the story of the last week of Christ’s life.  The score includes such chart-topping songs as “I Don’t Know How To Love Him,” “Everything’s Alright” and “Superstar.”

 

Jesus Christ Superstar will open on Broadway March 22, 2012 on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Birthday at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street) Chilina play’s the lead role of Mary Magdalene along side Paul Nolan as Jesus Christ and Josh Young as Judas Iscariot.

About Chilina Kennedy:

 

Chilina just finished her third season at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where she played Rose of Sharon in The Grapes of Wrath, directed by Antoni Cimolino and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, directed by Des McAnuff. Jesus Christ Superstar went on to La Jolla, CA for a six week run and will begin a run on Broadway in March 2012. Chilina made her Stratford debut in 2009 as Maria in the hit West Side Story opposite Paul Nolan, directed by Gary Griffin and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, directed by Des McAnuff. Chilina reprised her role as Philia in a remount of Forum at the Canon Theatre in Toronto. In her 2nd season she played the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita, directed again by Gary Griffin and Lois Lane in Kiss Me Kate, directed by John Doyle. Prior to that, she spent three seasons at the Shaw Festival. Selected roles there include Lydia in The President, Eileen in Wonderful Town and Nellie in Summer and Smoke. She performed in the world premiere of The Lord of the Rings (Mirvish Productions) and played Sophie in Mamma Mia! (U.S. first national tour).  At the Charlottetown Festival, she played Anne in Anne of Green Gables, was a part of Richard Ouzounian and MarekNorman’s Emily and the workshop of Not Wanted on the Voyage.  Performances with Theatre Aquarius include Angelina in the world premiere of On Albert Street, Mayzie in Seussical – The Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Chilina has worked for Stage West Mississauga, Thousand Islands Playhouse, Ganaraska Summer Stage and the Academy Theatre. Chilina is featured on CBC’s “Celebrate the Seasons” and had the opportunity to record with Burt Bacharach. Recently, Jason Robert Brown invited her to guest star with him in An Evening With Jason Robert Brown at the Glenn Gould Studio inToronto. Chilina is a recent graduate of the Bermingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre in Stratford.
